WASHINGTON—Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) issued the following statement in response to former President Trump’s indictment in connection with attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election: 

“January 6th will be remembered as one of the darkest days in American history. I was in the House chamber when rioters breached the Capitol, and I saw firsthand the devastation of the insurrection. Make no mistake: the tragic events of that day — and the lies and conspiracies pushed by former President Trump and his followers — did tremendous damage to our democracy. 

“Yesterday’s indictment reinforces the core democratic tenet that no person, no matter how powerful or influential, is above the law. Equally important are the due process protections afforded by our Constitution. The Special Counsel’s work must be allowed to continue without political interference.”
