Welch will continue fighting for Vermont families on Agriculture; Judiciary; and Rules Committees
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today announced he will join the powerful Senate Committee on Finance in the 119th Congress, and continue serving on the Senate Committees on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry; Judiciary; and Rules and Administration.
Senator Welch released the following statement on his assignments for the 119th Congress:
“We are in the midst of a brutal affordability crisis. I will use my seat at the table of the Senate Finance Committee to help level the playing field for Vermont families and all hardworking Americans.
“I will focus my work on the Finance Committee on lowering costs, expanding economic opportunities for working families, and protecting the programs folks rely on and deserve to know are safe—like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act. I will keep fighting for more accountability and transparency in the prescription drug market, and will fight for fair payments for providers so rural patients don’t lose access to health care. And importantly, I’m going to stand up against President-elect Trump’s proposed tariffs—a direct tax on Vermont families—and tax giveaways to the wealthiest at the expense of working people.
“I look forward to working with Chair Crapo, Ranking Member Wyden, and my friend and colleague Senator Bernie Sanders to help lower costs and expand opportunities in Vermont and across America. And I will continue to work across the aisle, as I have successfully throughout my time in the Senate and House of Representatives, to deliver results for Vermonters.
“It’s been an honor to serve on the Commerce Committee and the Joint Economic Committee. I appreciate the leadership of Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell and Ranking Member Ted Cruz, who worked together to advance important legislation that will reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration, create resilient supply chains, and so much more. I am proud that this Congress, President Biden signed into law a bill I led with Senator Cruz, the Testing, Rapid Analysis, and Narcotic Quality (TRANQ) Research Act—a bill first passed with bipartisan support out of the Commerce Committee. And I will continue to fight to restore the Affordable Connectivity Program, which millions rely on to access high-speed internet. I am also thankful to Chairman Heinrich and Vice Chairman Schweikert of the JEC for their bipartisan leadership and cooperation in shining a spotlight on the pressing economic challenges facing our country.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to keep fighting for Vermont families on the Agriculture, Judiciary, and Rules Committees, where I will continue to support rural communities, lower health care and energy costs, protect our democracy and improve our justice system.”
The 119th Congress will begin January 3, 2025.
