Vermont Senator Peter Welch had some choice words to say about President Donald Trump’s recent import tariffs on Canadian goods.
Welch, who was on the Senate floor in Washington D.C. on Wednesday to speak out about tariffs on the Canadian tariffs, called out the policies for causing unnecessary price hikes to gas, electricity and groceries.
“Everybody knows, except apparently President Trump, that the people who pay the tariffs are the people who buy the products,” Welch said. “This is really, really stupid. This is going to hurt Vermont.”
Welch went on to say that Trump “seems to think chaos is a good policy” and lamented that the increased prices of goods and services would be absorbed by small businesses in Vermont, who he said cannot afford to take on additional costs.
Welch is not the only member of Vermont’s Congressional Delegation to speak out against recent tariffs against Canada and Mexico.
Vermont Congresswoman Becca Balint recently said that Trump “recklessly started a trade war” with Mexico and Canada, and Senator Bernie Sanders has embarked on his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour in the Midwest as he has emerged as a leader of the resistance to Trump’s second presidency.
All three members of Vermont’s congressional delegation recently held a virtual statewide town hall that was attended by more than 34,000 where they discussed, among other things, a Republican-led budget bill that promised over a trillion dollars in tax cuts for Americans.
While tariffs have proven to be a concern for many residents in Vermont and Northern New York, some businesses say they believe the tariffs could give them a unique advantage in the marketplace.
