EAST CALAIS, VT – Today, Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) celebrated the ribbon cutting for the East Calais General Store Building and Apartments with Governor Phil Scott and local leaders. The project was partially funded by a Community Project Funding grant championed by Senator Welch when he served in the House of Representatives.
“An enduring commitment to community is one of the things that makes Vermont so special,” said Sen. Welch. “The East Calais General Store Building has been at the heart of the village for over a century, serving as a community gathering place and providing much-needed housing. I was pleased to play a role in helping ensure this historic building and meeting space continues to foster community in East Calais for decades to come.”
Built in 1850 and listed in the Vermont State Register of Historic Places, the East Calais General Store Building has long been a cornerstone of the East Calais community, utilized as a store, meeting place, and community resource. Recent renovations have revitalized the historic structure to create a new-and-improved general store with fresh food options, and affordable apartments above the store.
