WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) released the following statement today after the Senate voted to dismiss articles of impeachment against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas:
“Articles of impeachment should never be weaponized—they should be presented solemnly and rarely, and only when there is a sound, constitutional standing. The House’s sham impeachment did not rise to that occasion.
“This was an impeachment over policy disagreements. If Republicans were serious about fixing our immigration system, they would come to the table and negotiate in good faith. Instead, they have allowed a fringe group of right-wing extremists to lead their party’s approach on this critical issue, blocking all hope for compromise and progress.
“We could have focused this week on advancing policies that bring order to our immigration system and provide border security, while protecting those who seek safety and opportunity in America.
“The House Republicans’ impeachment attempt failed to advance anything for the American people. It offered no policy solutions. It offered no reforms. It delivered nothing but more chaos.”
