WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) released the following statement on reports that Elliot Onil Eastman, age 26, of Vermont, has died in the Philippines after being kidnapped in the Zamboanga del Norte province:
“If the reports of Elliot’s death are confirmed, it is a heartbreaking conclusion to this frightening situation. Our Embassy in the Manilla worked in coordination with the FBI’s hostage recovery team, and the Philippine defense forces to locate and bring Elliot home. Those who are responsible for his kidnapping, and reported death, must be held responsible.
“Margaret and I send our condolences to Elliot’s family, his wife, and his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Senator Welch reached out to express his condolences to Mr. Eastman’s family this morning. Since this situation began, the Senator engaged with the United States Ambassador to the Philippines, State Department officials, and members of the hostage recovery team working on Mr. Eastman’s case.
