Welch Statement on the Beginning of the 119th Congress

Jan 3, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C.Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) released the following statement on the start of the 119th Congress:

“When I walk onto the floor of the U.S. Senate, I think about the Vermonters I’ve been elected to represent: The parents working multiple jobs who just want a fair shake; the seniors who worry about their next meal; the sixth-generation family farmer forced to contend with climate change; the small business owner getting hammered by credit card swipe fees. Their voices, ideas, and values have always driven my work and kept me grounded.

“Here in Washington, bipartisanship doesn’t always make the news. But I will continue to look for common ground in the challenges and goals we share for our communities. When we work together to accomplish our shared goals—like passing comprehensive disaster aid, combatting the shifting drug crisis, or supporting our veterans—we make our communities stronger for generations to come.

“I will also continue to stand up for Vermonters and stand against any efforts by the Trump Administration or the Republican Majority to undermine our constitutional democracy or the free press, threaten our civil liberties, or attack our fellow citizens.

“I’ll continue to bring the voice and values of Vermonters to Washington, and look forward to keeping up the fight.”

Yesterday, Senator Welch announced he will join the powerful Senate Committee on Finance this Congress, and continue serving on the Senate Committees on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry; Judiciary; and Rules & Administration.
