WASHINGTON – Tonight, Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) released the statement below following passage of bipartisan legislation to suspend the debt ceiling and avert a U.S. default: 

“America has always paid its bills—in full and on time—and we must continue to do so.  Default would be catastrophic to Vermont families, communities, to our country, and America’s standing in the world.  

“Tonight, after careful consideration, I voted to pass this bill to preserve America’s longstanding commitment to meeting its fiscal obligations.”
