Welch Statement on Reports of GOP’s Attempt to Block Disaster Aid

Dec 18, 2024

Vermont experienced devastating flooding, severe storms July 2023 & July 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) released the following statement:

“This comprehensive disaster aid is the result of months of bipartisan work. It is vitally necessary to Americans in red states and blue states alike and will help folks in Vermont who were hit by catastrophic flooding, just as it will help folks in North Carolina, Iowa, and Louisiana.

“Disaster funding is a base-level function of government, and it supports hardworking people at a time when people desperately need it. To have it threatened—potentially blocked—because of the lobbying of a man with a net worth of $500 billion is a real statement of the weakness of the House of Representatives. I implore my colleagues to put their states and constituents before their party leaders.

“I will not abandon Vermont. Nor will I abandon other Americans hit by natural disasters. I will not support a government funding bill without comprehensive disaster aid.”
